Marian Lamoureux Hinsdale

Teaching Piano With Connection, Not Just Technique

Forty Years of Students Who Keep Playing

Marian Lamoureux of Hinsdale teaches piano to children and adults from her home studio in Hinsdale, Illinois. She has been teaching for more than four decades, starting at sixteen when she took on her first students in Ontario, Canada. She trained at the University of Western Ontario, earning an Honors Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Bachelor of Education, supported by scholarships to the university and to the Banff School of Fine Arts.

Marian's teaching philosophy centers on connection over drill. She believes students stay with piano not because they practice the right number of minutes, but because they feel a real relationship with the music in front of them. She chooses repertoire to match each student's interests and stage, whether that means a classical piece, a film theme, or a pop song the student actually listens to. The technique stays rigorous. The music changes to meet the student.

Born in Newcastle, Pennsylvania in 1959, Marian moved with her family to Ontario at age five and began piano lessons at seven. After completing her teaching certification in 1984, she taught in the Ontario school system for ten years while running a private piano studio and raising three children. In 1999, she relocated to Illinois and spent the next decade focused on full-time parenting. She now teaches piano from her home and prepares students for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations.
